The Falcons are undefeated no longer.
Over the course of 60 minutes of injuries, careless play, and questionable calls, the Buffalo Bills came into Atlanta and edged out the Falcons in a 23-17 thriller. Both teams now sit at 3-1.
The first drive for the Falcons started out promising with the offense firing on all cylinders. However, the Bills’ defense came through and forced a punt, which set the tone for the rest of the game. Neither offense was able to put consistent drives together. Matt Ryan threw two interceptions just a week after throwing three in a win in Detroit. Ryan also was stripped as he threw on a play that the Bills returned for a touchdown, though video replay clearly showed that Ryan had control of the ball and it should have been an incomplete pass. Nevertheless, the refs didn’t catch it and the Bills got 7 points.
The defense generally played well for the Falcons outside of a few lapses in coverage which ultimately proved to be costly.
The big story in this game was injuries. Julio Jones left the game with a hip injury and did not return. Mohamed Sanu also left the game with a hamstring injury and didn’t return. The Falcons also played without safety Ricardo Allen, linebacker Vic Beasley, defensive end Courtney Upshaw, and offensive tackle Ryan Schraeder.
Despite playing poorly, the Falcons still gave themselves a chance to win in the end, but they were unable to convert in four downs with seconds left after driving the ball into Bills’ territory.
Coming up for the Falcons will be a much-needed bye week to let everyone get healthy and to try to refocus after two straight weeks of sloppy play.
