Dallas Cowboys fullback Keith Smith was set to be a restricted free agent heading into the offseason but it appears that won’t be the case as they declined to tender him. Since the Falcons declined to re-sign Patrick DiMarco the run game hasn’t been the same. The Falcons signed ex-Seahawk Derrick Coleman to replace DiMarco and the run game declined significantly. Because of Coleman’s underwhelming season the Falcons are hastily looking for a new fullback.
Keith Smith is a bruising fullback that led to many big runs from Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliot. The Falcons are reportedly looking to add more power packages into their zone offense which Smith would certainly help with. Aaron Freeman from Falcfans.com posted some videos that show what Keith Smith is capable of.
Imagine the tandem of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman running through a hole like that with a player who can effectively block his assignment. Both Freeman and Coleman are capable of changing a game on the ground so signing Keith Smith should be a no brainer as he is clearly an upgrade over Derrick Coleman. Smith is also a good contributor on special teams which was an area the Falcons struggled with last season. If the Falcons want to have an explosive offense again they will have to keep their running backs clean and allow them to impact the game.
If the Falcons decide not to sign Keith Smith there are other options in free agency. Fullbacks such as Anthony Sherman, Zach Line, and John Kuhn could be had on a cheap contract. Should the Falcons opt to draft a fullback this year Dmitri Flowers from Oklahoma is an interesting name to keep an eye on. Nevertheless, whichever route the Falcons decide to take, the team will be improving on a position that was severely lacking over the course of last season.
