Falcons sign DT Terrell McClain to a 1-yr deal

Former Redskins and Cowboys defensive tackle Terrell McClain decided that it was best to join the brotherhood

Terrell McClain is coming off a down season after signing a 4-yr 21 million dollar deal with the Washington Redskins. During the draft it was evident that the Redskins were trying to replace him and add better fits to their defensive scheme,

Per Jordan Schultz, The Falcons were McClains final destination after being courted by multiple teams before meeting with Atlanta.

In Washington, Terrell McClain struggled to find the same magic that propelled him to receiving that massive contract from the Washington Redskins. McClain only amassed 20 tackles and 2 sacks in his first and only season with the Redskins. McClain is thought to be a miscast in the Redskins 3-4 scheme as he had success when he played in the Dallas Cowboys 4-3 scheme.

With the Atlanta Falcons, McClain will return to a scheme that featured him the best in his career. In his career with Cowboys he was their top run defender each season. Andrew Brandt provided the numbers on Terrell McClain’s contract.

McClain signed a 1-yr 4 million dollar deal to play for the Atlanta Falcons in which it is presumed that he will start at 1-tech with Grady Jarrett at 3-tech in the base defense.

This may not be a popular signing but it is an important one. The Falcons defensive live depth before this move was looking a bit shaky. The Falcons took defensive tackle Deadrin Senat out of South Florida in the draft this year but forcing the rookie to start wouldn’t have been a good idea.

Terrell McClain provides veteran insurance should Senat not be ready to contribute early. Adding McClain to a interior defensive line that includes Grady Jarrett, former Cowboys defensive tackle Jack Crawford, and Deadrin Senat. The Falcons will look for McClain to provide everything the Dontari Poe did in his short tenure with the Atlanta Falcons.
