2018 Hawks Draft Prospect: Shake Milton

Continuing on with our NBA Draft Prospect Profiles, we now will take a look at the lanky point guard, Shake Milton, from SMU.

Shake Milton is a freakishly long combo guard who has added on some needed strength in his time at SMU. He is also one of the better shooters in this draft that can instantly help any team right away. He could be one of the diamonds in the rough in this draft as he has the right intangibles to be a solid role player in the NBA

Getting into Milton’s film, you can see why he was one of the more valuable players in the country according to the +/- ratings.  His basketball IQ his sky high and he can pick apart opposing defenses. Milton’s court vision isn’t great but he can make some passes that would be difficult for others to make. His ball handling skills are also fairly good given his size. Milton has great shot selection but can also shoot from anywhere or over anyone off the dribble.

Milton, while having a unique skill set, still needs to add more weight to his frame. He is a decent finisher at the rim but he will need he will need to bulk up to consistently finish at the rim in the NBA. His defense needs some work as he seems to get lost on screens and isn’t always in a great help-defense position.

I can see Shake Milton as being the perfect pick for the Hawks at 30 if he is still there. He has a unique skill set that comes with the offensive skills to contribute off the bench right away. With new head coach Lloyd Pierce preaching defense in his press conference, I think he would enjoy building Milton’s skill set on the defensive side. He could play backup minutes at the 1 or the 2 and given the Hawks some more size along the perimeter.

Ultimately I think he would be a steal at 30 or at 34. At the same time, I just don’t think he will last until then. The Hawks also have pick 19 but that may be a stretch to take Milton there. The Hawks could always trade down a couple spots from 19, but it’s a wait and see who is on the board type deal. Milton would immediately have a role off the bench for the Hawks and could be viewed as a long term project as new coach Lloyd Pierce tries to keep “Hawks University” a real thing.
