The Atlanta Hawks selected Omari Spellman from Villanova with the 30th pick in the first round of the 2018 draft. Spellman 6’9, 253 pounds played power forward at Villanova winning Big East Freshman of the Year in 2017-2018. This comes after the selections of Trae Young (5th pick) and Kevin Huerter (19th pick).
Spellman averaged about 11ppg and 8rpg last season. He was also 1 of 4 Division 1 players with 50 blocks and 50 3-pointers made last season. He scored 8 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the National Championship game against Michigan. He is a great all-around athlete with very much potential to succeed in the NBA.
The video below shows how athletic and versatile Spellman is on the court, and the potential he brings to the NBA:
His combination of post play, with a promising 3 point shot, as well as solid defense have given him NBA comparisons to Marcus Morris. He joins a young rebuilding Hawks team, where GM Travis Schlenk hopes to have found his next Draymond Green. It was a great pick at 30, and a great way to wrap up the last of three picks for Atlanta.
