Josef Martinez breaks all-time MLS record as Atlanta United roll 3-1

Atlanta United came into Saturday’s match desperately needing a win to remain on top of the Supporter’s Shield race. Things got off to a shaky start with DC United scoring in just the 8th minute, but the Five Stripes would respond in a major way. Josef Martinez would go on to net the remaining three goals of the game. It was Josef’s his 6th MLS Hat Trick, breaking the MLS all time record in just his 2nd season.  Martinez is also now within 5 goals of breaking the single season goal scoring record of 27 goals. We could be watching the greatest striker in MLS History!

As for the team as a whole, Atlanta now sits at 44 Points with 22 games played, good for first in the East. However, NYCFC and NYRB are also averaging 2 PPG with 2 and 3 games in hand respectively on Atlanta. Also of note, if Atlanta finishes 4 points clear of NYCFC, they will automatically qualify for the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League.

Up next for our Five Stripes is a match next weekend North of the Border with the Montreal Impact.

Braves and Nationals get rained out, face off this afternoon

Atlanta (53-42) and Washington (48-49)  were also set to face off on the diamond Saturday Afternoon but Mother Nature had other plans. With DC getting slammed with rain all day, officials postponed Saturday’s matchup. The make-up date is to be announced but Atlanta only makes one more trip to the Nation’s Capital. If the teams make the game up on August 6th, it will mean Atlanta will face a stretch of 35 games in 36 days; obviously not ideal. Therefore we could see a double header on August 7th.

Sunday, the Braves will go for the series sweep at 1:35 PM. All-Stars Mike Foltynewicz (7-5) will take the mound facing Matt Scherzer (12-5). Unfortunately, it appears that weather could threaten this matchup as well.

Dream go for 7 straight

Head on down to Georgia Tech and check out our streaking Dream go for their 7th straight win! 2nd place Atlanta (14-9) will be gunning for their franchise record 7th straight win Sunday afternoon vs the first place Seattle Storm (18-6). After an up and down first half of the season, the Dream have been on an absolute tear the past few weeks which has seen them catapult from 8th to 2nd in the standings.

BB&T Atlanta Open

Now through July 29th head on down to Atlantic Station and check out some of the world’s best battle it out on the tennis court!

Come back tomorrow, and everyday for another “Today in the A”!

Hawks sign Len

In somewhat of a surprising move, the Atlanta Hawks signed FA Center Alex Len to a 2-year 8.5 Million Dollar deal. The 25 year old 7 footer has had an uninspiring career but with reduced expectations in Atlanta he could find his comfort zone. He is expected to battle for time with Miles Plumlee and Omari Spellman with Dewayne Dedmon appearing to have the Center starting spot locked down.
