Hooper is ready to flourish.
There was a lot of pressure on Austin Hooper coming into the 2017 season. During the end of the 2016 season was when Hooper started to come along, and many thought his second season would be his time to break out.
In the first game against the Bears, he had an amazing touchdown for 88 yards that helped the Falcons extend the lead. From then on he had a quiet season, and some problems catching the ball. It was a number of times where Hooper might have fumbled the ball or didn’t catch it in a crucial moment. One that people remember is the fumbled pass against the Dolphins near the end zone.
There were expectations that Hooper would be that player that Matt Ryan would look for on third downs, similar to what Tony Gonzalez was good for in his time for Atlanta. With so many offensive weapons, it wouldn’t just be on Hooper to catch crucial passes when needed.
Last season Hooper worked out with Matt Ryan to help build their chemistry heading into 2017. Hooper did the same thing this with Ryan every chance he got. Trying to get on the same page as your quarterback is a good idea, and this should make their chemistry even better heading into this season. Last season may have been the season that Hooper was supposed to breakout, but maybe we were a year too early. With a 2nd year under his belt and settling in the offense, look for big things for Austin in this offense.
