Braves Address Bench Needs In Waiver Wire Trades

Today, the Atlanta Braves made two trades to address bench needs. Catcher Rene Rivera was acquired from the Anaheim Angels through a straight waiver claim, which means that the Braves will assume the rest of his 2018 salary that has roughly $500,000 left on it. With the Braves releasing veteran catcher Chris Stewart earlier this week, this appears to be a precautionary move in case of injury to Tyler Flowers or Kurt Suzuki. In 82 ABs, Rivera hit .244 with 4 HRs and 11 RBIs.

In the second move, the Braves addressed a huge need by acquiring the left handed bat of Lucas Duda from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations. The Royals will cover about half of Duda’s remaining 2018 salary in the deal. In 306 ABs, Duda hit .242 with 13 HRs and 48 RBIs. Duda hit 11 of his 13 H’s against right handed pitching, which made him attractive to teams looking for left handed bench help.
