Even the mighty fall sometimes.

For the first time since early March in Houston, the Five Stripes got dominated. Atlanta United was not able to capitalize on the Red Bull’s equally shocking Saturday loss to regain hold of the lead in the Supporter’s Shield Standings.

Atlanta United seemed to just be a step slow Sunday Evening at Audi Field. After DC opened the scoring with a Acosta goal a half hour in, Jeff Larentowicz was able to equalize 10 minutes later to usher in halftime at a 1-1 tie.

Things would only go downhill from there.

Early in the 2nd half, DC drew a penalty in the box and Wayne Rooney calmly netted the PK to make it 2-1. After Josef Martinez missed a sitter to equalize, Acosta flew another one past Brad Guzan to put the match out of reach.

The Five Stripes (54 Points 16-6-5 27 GP) now trail NYRB (55 Points, 28 GP) for the Supporter’s Shield and 1st place in the Eastern Conference by one point, but have a game in hand. Also, if Atlanta manages to finish the season 4 points clear of NYCFC, an automatic berth to the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League will be scored.

As for DC United, hope is still alive as they are now just 6 points out of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
