Another week, another disappointment.
The Falcons wasted yet another career performance from quarterback Matt Ryan on Sunday and dropped a close, high-scoring home contest to the Cincinnati Bengals, 37-36.
Ryan threw for 419 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, but it wasn’t enough, as Atlanta’s injury-riddled defense was not able to make the stops they needed to against Andy Dalton and co. Dalton had a nice game himself, throwing for 337 yards and engineering a game-winning drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to A.J. Green with just seconds left.
This was the second straight week where Atlanta scored at least 36 points, committed no turnovers, and still lost, with last week being a disheartening loss to our friends from New Orleans who shall remain unnamed here.
It was another great day for rookie wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who pitched in two touchdowns after scoring three last week. That makes six on the season for the Alabama product, which leads all rookies. Star receiver Julio Jones also had a standout game with 173 receiving yards.
The Atlanta defense, which is missing stars like Deion Jones, Keanu Neal, and Ricardo Allen, held the Bengals to just 9 points in the second half after giving up 28 in the first, but it still wasn’t enough to earn a victory.
The loss drops Atlanta to 1-3 on the season, with the lone win coming against the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons will hit the road next week for a contest in Pittsburgh against the Steelers, which is already looking like a must-win game early on in the season.
Let’s hope they make some adjustments and get back on track before it’s too late.
