Atlanta Falcons @ Cleveland Browns Official Recap

The Falcons Browns game November 11th was one to forget. The Browns debuted a new play action/option offense under new coach and Offensive coordinator. It had the Falcons defense confused to start. Trufant was beat 3 times in the first quarter. The Falcons secondary was unorganized giving up first down after first down eventually giving up a TD to Rashad Higgins on the Browns second series of the game. That was the Browns first 1st quarter TD of the season.

Matt Ryan did not complete a pass to a wide receiver in the 1st quarter. Falcons ended the first running a Sanu wildcat on 4th and 2 and were in scoring position at the Cleveland 37. Falcons had some offensive miscues in the red zone and kicked a FG to make the score 3-7 to open the 2nd.

On the Browns next series the now NFL’s interception leader Demontae Kazee intercepted Baker Mayfield as they tried to get fancy on a trick play. On a high at the Browns 45, Matt Ryan marched down the field and threw a screen pass to Julio Jones at the Browns 2 to make the score 10-7. On the drive Julio became the fastest player ever to reach 10,000 receiving yards.

Baker Mayfield continued his perfect game and the Browns scored on a play action screen to Nick Chubb to take the lead 14-10. Matt Ryan took a huge sack late and the half ended. Baker Mayfield was 12 for 12 at the half with 2 TDs.

Sanu fumbled on the opening possession trying to reach for a first down and the Browns recovered at the Falcons’ 32 yard line. On the Browns’ ensuing possession the Falcons missed a potential fumble recovery and the Browns momentum gained. 

Mayfield threw his first completion at 10:52 in the third quarter. Mayfield marched down the field and threw a 11 yard TD to Duke Johnson to take the lead 21-10. The Falcons defense was exhausted. The offense went 3 and out the next possession and then the defense gave up a 92 yard run to Nick Chubb to bring the score to 28 to 10. The Falcons had another 3 and out next drive and the offense looked to be losing steam.

After back and forth 3 and outs, the Falcons started the 4th moving the ball at the Browns 43. The Falcons failed on 4th and goal at the 1 and Cleveland got the ball back. They went 3 and out and the Falcons scored on a TD pass to Hooper late with a missed 2 point conversion bringing the score to 16-28.

The Falcons failed to score again and lost the game 18-26. Matt Ryan had a career high 38 completions today but the Browns defense and lack of Falcons secondary cost them the game.
