The Recruiting dead period comes to an end on Wednesday as coaches can contact recruits again and the class of 2019 can sign their letter of intent. Even with the new early signing period in December, the February signing day will always be an exciting day because several big fish will be making their decision.
Geoff Collins and his staff have been on the recruiting trail nonstop and hope to see all the hard-work payoff for two certain 2019 targets.
Before we get into the deep breakdown of those two targets, let’s recap the days between the December signing period until today. The December early signees were:
- Jamal Camp- DT/ South Forsyth
- D’Quan Douse- WDE/ Calvary Day School
- Demetrius Knight- QB/ Strong Rock Christian
- Jeremiah Smith- Safety/ Grayson
- Dylan Deveney- TE/ Hun School
- Devin Ellison- Safety/ Bartram Trail
- Chico Bennett- LB/ Battle Ground Academy
- Tony Amerson- RB/ St. James School
- Jordan Yates- QB/ Milton
- Kenan Johnson- CB/ Lake Minneola
- Zach Owens- WR/ Pope
- Sylvian Yondjouen- DE / Belgium
- Jordan Huff- ATH/ Morgan County
- Kalani Norris- WR/ Columbus(Miami)
- Ahmarean Brown- WR/ Jefferson(Tamp Bay)
- Wesley Walker- CB/ Ensworth (Nashville)
- Jared Southers- Grad Transfer OT (technically don’t sign anything)
- Tyler Davis- Grad Transfer TE (technically don’t sign anything)
The Jackets entered that early signing period with 21 commits and ended with 18 signees as Briton Allen(DB) flipped to USC, Joshua Black(OL) has since committed to Louisville, and Larry Dowdy(OL) has since committed to Appalachian State.
At the end of January, 1st Team All ACC Olineman, Parker Braun, announced that he was going to graduate early and transfer.
Then a couple days ago, Marquez Ezzard, transfer from Miami and Stockbridge, Georgia native, announced his intentions to transfer to the Flats. Ezzard wasn’t the only commit/transfer Georgia Tech landed since December. The Jackets landed WR Nazir Burnett from Pennsylvania and LB Cornelius Evans from Central Gwinnett. Neither has announced when they plan to sign but these two are solid commits.
All in all, it has been an entertaining off-season for Georgia Tech fans and it could get even better on Wednesday. The Jackets will have their eyes on DLineman Michael Lockhart from Alabama and RB Jamious Griffin from Rome, Georgia.
Michael Lockhart was a one time UAB commit but saw his recruitment take off his senior season. Lockhart will be deciding between Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs once were viewed as the leader for the big fella but a late coaching change on the defensive side of the ball really slowed that ball. Georgia Tech sits in a good spot here and this would be a huge addition if does indeed head to the Flats.
Jamious Griffin is the big fish left out there. The one time NC State commit was named first team All American and if you watch his film you will see why. He is a superb talent and his brother, JaQuon Griffin, who is a member of the Georgia Tech defensive line and saw some playing time as a true freshman this season. Jamious Griffin will be deciding on Wednesday morning where he will be going to college and it is between Georgia Tech, Auburn, NC State, and Louisville.
Louisville and Auburn were both late entries but both made huge strides to catch the eye of Griffin. Before the dead period the Jackets sent the whole coaching staff(except Coach Collins because he already had his in home visit) to Griffin’s home, actually a day before he was supposed to take a visit to FSU according to 247 sports. All the coaches visiting made enough of an impact that it may have led to the cancellation of Griffin’s FSU visit.
Georgia Tech should feel good about their chances, especially after looking at crystal ball and Rivals future cast predictions. Griffin would make an immediate impact and be a big problem for opposing defenses.
Lockhart and Griffin would both be big additions and be the icing on the cake for this recruiting class.
Jamious Griffin will announce his decision on Fox 5 between 8:50-9:15AM according to his twitter.
Michael Lockhart hasn’t announced a time but was asking on twitter if somebody can make him an “edit” so one would think that he will make his decision sometime on Wednesday via twitter.
Follow along on Wednesday with @wreckhavocatl to see if GT lands these two!
