It’s match week!
The 1st leg will be played in Costa Rica while the 2nd leg will be played at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw on Thursday, February 28 where United has previously hosted U.S. Open Cup matches. The winner will go on to the quarterfinals to either play Alianza (ESL) or Monterrey (MEX).
For those who don’t already know, CONCACAF Champions League consists of teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Atlanta qualified for the tournament by having the most points combined from all MLS teams in the 2017 inaugural season and 2018 season.
This will be the first test for new head coach Frank De Boer’s side as this competition has not had the best history for MLS clubs. Mexican League (Liga MX) Teams have dominated this tournament since its foundation.
Atlanta United’s goal is obviously to win the tournament especially with the capability and roster depth of the reigning MLS Cup Champions. This will be one of the team’s biggest tasks; they have broken pretty much every record for attendance and ticket sales, but now it’s time to set out for accomplishing even bigger achievements, success and championships. Fan expectations are set incredibly high when you have MVP Josef Martinez and South American Footballer of the Year Gonzalo “Pity” Martinez on your team.
Fans can watch and follow the CCL Competition and Atlanta United play on the Yahoo Sports website or by using the Yahoo Sports App on your device. Games will also be broadcasted and shown live on Univision Deportes. VAMOS ATLANTA!
