The Atlanta Legends were looking to bounce back against the San Diego Fleet, but unfortunately fell short of getting the win last night. Head coach Kevin Coyle still stuck with quarterback Matt Simms after last week’s performance against the Orlando Apollos. Simms started the game similar to the Apollos game and he even threw the first touchdown in the history of the Atlanta Legends. However, as stated earlier in the week, the Legends needed to take care of the ball and right before halftime Simms threw an interception allowing the Fleet to get a field goal to make it 9-6.
The Legends offense really struggled in the second half. They only scored 3 points in the second half and made their defense stay out on the field way too long. The Legends defense was gassed in the fourth quarter where the Fleet were able to out score the Legends 18 to 3. The Fleet would go on to win the game 24-12, making the Legends fall to 0-2 on the season and join the Memphis Express and the Salt Lake Stallions as the only teams in the AAF without a win.
The only positives from this game is that the Legends did look improved against the Fleet, but still made costly mistakes especially in crucial moments in the game. The Legends defense got called for illegal formations several times in the 2nd half, including when the Fleet were in third and longs that would of given the Legends offense more opportunities. Also during the game, the announcers did state that Coyle wanted to get Aaron Murray involved in the game. However, he did not get in the game and after seeing Matt Simms these last two games, a change a quarterback would be good. Murray has only played once and that was in the final seconds of the game against Orlando where he threw an interception.
Up next for the Legends is the Birmingham Iron. Kickoff is at 4:00 PM on Sunday February 24th. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network. This will also be the Legends first home game of the season. Follow @BirdsInTheBenz on twitter throughout the game.
