Jackets Open ACC Tournament against the Fighting Irish

Georgia Tech finished the regular season with 2 straight wins including a major win on the road last Wednesday against NC State. With Miami losing to Virginia Tech last Friday, the Jackets secured the 10th seed in the ACC tournament. Today the Jackets will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to open up tournament play. The Jackets and Irish face each other twice during the regular season and split the series 1-1. The Jackets in both games struggled to stop Notre Dame’s big man John Mooney who is arguably the best player for the Irish. In the first game Mooney had 14 rebounds and 22 points. In the second game Mooney had 14 rebounds again, but had 11 points as he struggled to shoot the ball.

In order for the Jackets to have success, they need to continue to do what they have done in their last 2 games which was hitting their shots, keeping the turnovers low, and getting James Banks III involved. Banks had the game winning dunk on Wednesday to beat NC State. However, Banks isn’t the only one that has stepped up of late. Sophomore point guard Jose Alvarado has found his game after the slump he went through during the Jackets losing streak they had going on during the majority of conference play. The Jackets have also gotten solid production from sophomore forward Moses Wright, who has really helped the Jackets especially towards end of the regular season.

The Jackets will continue to look to get Banks involved early in the game and if they do it will open up opportunities for Alvarado and Michael Devoe who has had a good freshman season. Tipoff against Notre Dame is at 2:00 and follow @wreckhavocatl on twitter throughout the game.
