Georgia Tech 2019 baseball recap

The 2019 Georgia Tech baseball season will be one that Tech fans will remember. The Jackets were able to surprise everyone as they won the Coastal division and were runner up ACC champions. The Jackets were also able to do very well with an extremely difficult schedule. Tech won the season series against top ranked Georgia, beat UCLA who has been the number one team in the country all season long, only lost one ACC series, and had a winning record against top 25 teams. However, the biggest thing to remember about this team was the adversity that they had to overcome. Losing their ace pitcher Xzavion Curry and losing Brant Hurter to Tommy John surgery. The Jackets had to rely on freshman Cort Roedig and Amos Willingham to step up for the Jackets in the rotation and they did. Connor Thomas also stepped up and became the ace of the Jackets rotation.

Offensively, the Jackets had one of the best offenses in the country. Catcher Kyle McCann had a great season as he hit right around .300. He also had 23 home runs and about 70 RBI’s. First basemen Tristian English also had a great season. English with McCann had the clutch gene for the Jackets. English was able to do everything as hitter, defender, and even on the mound. He was the designated closer for the Jackets this season and did an excellent job. One of the games that Tech fans will remember was the ACC tournament game against Duke, where English picked up the win and had the game winning hit to beat Duke and advance to the semifinals against NC State.

The only thing that did tarnish this magical season that the Jackets had was the NCAA tournament. The Jackets were the number three seed in the tournament and were hosting a regional that included Auburn, Coastal Carolina, and Florida A&M. The good thing for the Jackets was that they already faced Auburn twice in the regular season as they swept the midweek series against the Tigers. However, Auburn would be the one to get the last laugh as they broke the Jacket hearts Saturday night where they walked off on Tech and Sunday night when they eliminated the Jackets as well as advanced to the Super Regionals to play against North Carolina. The Jackets finished the season with a 43-19 overall record.

The 2019 Yellow Jacket baseball team will go down as one of the best teams in the history of Georgia Tech baseball. They were such a fun team to watch and made practically every game exciting. There will be a lot of question marks for the Jackets entering the 2020 season as McCann, English, and Thomas could all leave early depending on where they are drafted in the 2019 MLB Draft, but Yellow Jacket nation will have to wait and see what happens in the draft.
