This is not Goodbye

With sadness I am announcing that ATLSportsHQ.com will be decommissioned in the coming days.

With years of hard work and dedication from many writers and contributors, the ATLSportsHQ.com URL brought a new era of sports coverage in Atlanta sports.

Unfortunately the momentum was unsustainable. Thank you to the dozens of talented writers that have lend a hand to making this site more successful than I ever imagined possible.

From the starting crew of Nate, Garrett, Malik, Daric and others, to the late coming saviors of Bob, Andrew, Reeves and many many more, and E for giving us a shot on air radio; I’d like to thank you for making the dream of having a sports website possible.

The ATLSportsHQ brand is going nowhere.

Roundtable: Hawks Season Predictions

Let’s slow down. Taking a look at Twitter would have you thinking that the Hawks are locks for the postseason. While it is possible, I just don’t see it. Not yet. This team has a lot of work in front of them, not to mention the daunting early schedule. Losing several key veterans will be hard to overcome despite the rookie acquisitions. Also, depth is a major issue, especially behind Trae and at the Center spot. Despite the flaws, the Hawks will be one of the league’s most exciting squads and will find themselves in the thick of things after the All-Star Break. Ultimately they will find themselves outside the top 8 but will show improvement with their 36-46 record.

Bob Lancaster | @bowlinbob

30-35 Wins. Could this be on the low side? Possibly, but let’s be real here. You are bringing in two rookie pieces possibly 3 with Bruno and expecting them to gel from the beginning with the existing pieces. The three keys for me to see that record improve and challenge for an 8th playoff spot are Defensive Improvement, Less Turnovers, and production from the Center position.

Jared Schmehl | @SchmehlJared

The Hawks will improve upon their last season after making many offseason acquisitions and drafting Cam Reddish, De’Andre Hunter, and Bruno Fernando. Our offense and defense will both improve. Trae Young and John Collins will both be all star reserves. We will look a lot more sharp in the second half of the season as we will have built a strong chemistry. I expect the Hawks’ record to be around 38-44, and we will push for the 8th seed.

Stewart Zwald | @SDZwald041599

This season, the Atlanta Hawks will be a fun a team to watch with the young core the Hawks have. However, they have a brutal schedule to open up the first 2 months of the season which includes matchups against the 76ers, Heat, Spurs, Trail Blazers, Nuggets, Clippers, Lakers, Bucks, and the defending NBA champions Toronto Raptors. I do believe that the Hawks will be better than the 29-53 record that they had last season, but I don’t see the Hawks making the playoffs this season. This is still a very young team and will go through some ups and downs. Defense is still a major question as well turnovers. Turnovers were a major issue this preseason and looked better in the final 2 games of the preseason especially against the Knicks. I believe that the Hawks will finish this season with a 38-44 record. I think the Hawks will just miss the playoffs. I expect Trae to have a great Sophomore season as he will just get better as the season goes on.

Bret Anderson | @Bret_A27

The Hawks are going to surprise some folks this season as they have added some extremely talented rookies, Cam Reddish and DeAndre Hunter along with big man Bruno Fernando. The Hawks did lose 3 key pieces to their team from last season, all 3 of which started at some point for the Hawks last season(Bazemore, Prince, Dedmond). Bazemore was sent out to Portland for Evan Turner who will serve as the primary backup PG to Trae Young. Speaking of Young, he is looking to build off an historic rookie seasons and his pick and roll counterpart, John Collins, will be looking to take that leap into “star” status with another big season. The Hawks season will come down to limiting turnovers. They are going to put points on the board and will give up their fair share too, but if they can limit their turnovers, they will be a good, playoff caliber team. I will take a page out of the Paul Johnson book here and say “this team has no margin for error” in reference to the turnovers. 37-45

Evan Nix

I think the Hawks will start this season slow. They don’t have much scoring, contain a lot of new players and Trae Young has to how learn to transition to a Star. With the West being stacked and the East getting better, the Hawks will struggle most the season going 22-60

Phillip Veasley – ATLUTD Shake the Quakes – But at what Cost?

th (38)
prosoccerusa.com

Atlanta United got a big three points Saturday, but lost Josef Martinez in the process.

Yes, we got the much needed win. But let’s get right to what everyone is talking about. Star Striker, Josef Martinez is hurt and the scoring streak is over at 15. The King would have to sub out several minutes after sustaining an apparent knee injury in the 79th minute. Early speculations do not sound good but nothing official has been released by the club. If Josef is unable to participate in the playoffs, it would likely mean an early exit for the Defending MLS Champs.

After demoralizing a timid Cincinnati side in the 2nd half Wednesday, Atlanta would find themselves with their hands full against scrappy San Jose.

Justin Meram would open the scoring in just the 4th minute and it appeared that United were off to the races. Just over 20 minutes later though, the Quakes would equalize with an own goal that took an awkward deflection.

Atlanta would catch a huge break a few minutes later after Cristian Espinoza was sent off with his second yellow. This made San Jose irate but it appeared there was ill intent and even if Espinoza wasn’t already on yellow, there could’ve been an argument there for a straight red.

United would fail to capitalize being up a man for nearly a hour. Finally, after several marvelous saves from Daniel Vega, Emerson Hyndman found the game winner. Darlington Nagbe served a delicious ball to Hyndman who took advantage of Vega coming off his line. It was a moment of pure euphoria in the stadium who had been on pins and needles the majority of the afternoon.

Two minutes later, Pity Martinez added insurance with a goal of his own. Obviously, we will need to see this Pity if Josef is unable to return this season.

The win was United’s 11th in the last 14 games across all competitions who now sit at 54 Points and 2nd in the East.

What’s up Next?

Atlanta United head to the Big Apple for a crucial match vs NYCFC. Depending on Sunday’s results, this could be a match to determine 1st place.

If NYCFC and Philadelphia lose Sunday, Atlanta would again be on the inside track for 1st place in the East.

NYCFC faces FC Dallas while the Union face New York Red Bulls. Both kick-off at 6PM. Be sure to head to @SSSATLUTD on Twitter after for a look at the updated table.

Unfortunately, the odds will be against the Five Stripes Wednesday with it appearing likely that Josef will not travel even if his injury is deemed minor.

With just three matches left and a compact playoff schedule, the grueling season is coming to a close. No matter what happens, this season has to be seen as a success.

The game can be seen on Fox Sports Southeast with Kevin Eagan and Dan Gargan.  On the go? Tune in to 92.9 and listen to Mike Conti and Jason Longshore’s call.

Gametime is set for 7PM at the back yard pitch. Oops, I meant Yankee Stadium.

Prediction: 3-1 NYCFC (assuming no Josef)

Interesting Start to the Football Season for the Georgia State Panthers

G S Michael Patrick_WVLT
Micheal Patrick / WVLT

After what can be described as nothing less than a train wreck, Georgia State’s 2-10 2018 season left fans disappointed and with very low expectations for 2019. This disappointment not only came from Panther fans but also from the Georgia State Athletic Staff seeing how the 2019 season began with six new coaches for the team. Starting off strong was going to be no easy task for the Panthers though, they had to travel to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers in week one.

What seemed to be an inevitable loss for the Panthers, left fans and the entire college football world shocked when the Panthers prevailed over the Volunteers in a 38-30 win. This incredible win was spearheaded by Panther Quarterback Dan Ellington who was 11 for 24 with 139 passing yards and two passing touchdowns as well as 61 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Ellington’s performance wasn’t the only key to victory for the Panthers; Tra Barnett and Seth Paige also combined to rush for 135 yards and two touchdowns. This week one win over an SEC school instilled confidence and excitement in the Panthers organization as well as the fan base.

Week two against Furman turned out to be an unexpected challenge for the Panthers. The first half of their home opener was not off to an ideal start seeing how the Panthers were trailing 17-20 at half. Despite the halftime score, the Panthers were able to score 31 points in the second half thanks to four passing touchdowns from Quarterback Dan Ellington. This allowed the Panthers to squeeze out a 48-42 win over Furman.

Next up for the 2-0 Panthers was a battle with Western Michigan in Kalamazoo against the 1-1 Broncos. Despite the hype surrounding the organization, there were problems on both sides of the ball for Georgia State. Starting with the offense, Ellington was held to 126 passing yards and only one touchdown with no help from the Panther defense who gave up just shy of 700 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns. This led to an astounding Panthers loss as they fell to Western Michigan in a 59-10 blowout.

Week 4 was seen by many to be a shot at redemption for the past week’s blowout. The Panthers were on the road again, but this time they were taking on the 0-3 Texas State Bobcats. It seemed as though the Panthers underestimated the Bobcats in week 4. Even though the Panthers led the Bobcats in total offense (420-334 respectively), the Bobcats prevailed over the Panthers 37-34 in a triple overtime thriller. After the game, Panthers head coach Shawn Elliot blamed Turnovers and Time management as the main culprit for the loss stating, “We give them 10 points with turnovers and at the end of the game, we mismanaged the clock and didn’t get out of bounds when we should have.” This most recent loss for the Panthers has them 2-2 going into to their week 5 bye week.

What should the Panthers work on during their bye week? Well it seems that in the past two games, the two main problems for the Panthers has been their Defense and turning the ball over. Hopefully Georgia State uses their week off to find a way to neutralize offenses because no defense should be giving up over 1000 combined yards in two games. Keeping possession of the ball should also be a priority. In their game against Texas State Coach Elliot said himself that turnovers ultimately lost them the game. Both of these problems need to be addressed and fixed in order for the Panthers to be successful in week 6 when the 2-2 Arkansas State Red Wolves come to Atlanta to face the Panthers in their second home game of the season.
