This is not Goodbye

With sadness I am announcing that will be decommissioned in the coming days.

With years of hard work and dedication from many writers and contributors, the URL brought a new era of sports coverage in Atlanta sports.

Unfortunately the momentum was unsustainable. Thank you to the dozens of talented writers that have lend a hand to making this site more successful than I ever imagined possible.

From the starting crew of Nate, Garrett, Malik, Daric and others, to the late coming saviors of Bob, Andrew, Reeves and many many more, and E for giving us a shot on air radio; I’d like to thank you for making the dream of having a sports website possible.

The ATLSportsHQ brand is going nowhere.

Legends travel to Birmingham

The Atlanta Legends travel to Birmingham to face the Iron. The Legends are coming off a 36-6 loss to the Apollos last week. The Legends once again turned over the ball too much and just couldn’t slow down Orlando at all. It also made it back to back weeks where the Legends gave up 30 or more points. In week 6, the Legends gave up 37 to the San Antonio Commanders and have now given up a total of 73 points in a span of 2 games. The Legends have also not been able to hold on to the ball as quarterback Aaron Murray has thrown 4 interceptions in his last 2 games. With just 3 games left in the season, the Legends will be looking at trying to end this inaugural season at least .500.

The Legends will be facing the Iron for the second time this season. The first meeting was back in Week 3 and the Iron won 28-12. In that game, the Legends defense gave the offense plenty of opportunity to take control of the game, but the offense never could. The Legends offense also struggle to get in the end zone as they have struggled the whole season with this. Iron’s running back Trent Richardson has 2 touchdowns in that game as well. This week the Legends will be looking to shut down the Iron’s rushing attack and force quarterback Luis Perez to make some mistakes.

In order for the Legends to win today, they will need Aaron Murray to return to his old self. As stated earlier, Murray has thrown 4 interceptions in his last 2 games. He will need to not turnover the ball so much and gives the offense more opportunities to score. Murray has shown that he can get the offense into the end zone and give this team a chance to win. The Legends will also be looking to establish their running game. One thing that head coach Kevin Coyle has emphasize this season was that they need to establish a run game. So far this season, the Legends haven’t been able to run the ball effectively.

On the defensive side of the ball the Legends need to limit big plays and have a pass rush to have some sort of success today. Kickoff against the Iron is at 4:00 and follow @BirdsInTheBenz on twitter throughout the game.

Legends Host Apollos

The Atlanta Legends will look to bounce back today against the Orlando Apollos. The Apollos and Legends have already met this season and that was on the opening night of the AAF where the Apollos just absolutely routed the Legends. Since their first meeting, the Apollos have had a great season with a 5-1 record and just suffered their first lost on the year last week against the Arizona Hotshots. For the Legends, they will be looking to play a whole lot better this week after getting routed by the San Antonio Commanders putting the Legends at 2-4 on the season.

Entering today’s game against the Apollos, the Legends will be looking to establish the run. In last week’s game the Legends struggle to get a good running game going as the Commanders defensive front just did whatever they wanted against the Legends offensive line. Atlanta will also look to not turnover the ball so much. Quarterback Aaron Murray easily had his worst game of the season last week as he had an interception and just never really got it going. The Legends overall had 3 turnovers against the Commanders and on all those turnovers the Commanders were able to capitalize off of them. Look for the Legends to try get their run game going and allow Murray to use his feet. In the 2 games that the Legends have won, Murray has been able to have an impact with his legs.

Defensively the Legends will be looking to try and stop this high scoring Apollos offense. The Apollos easily have the best offense in the AAF led by quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Gilbert will be looking to bounce back from his awful game against the Hotshots. The Legends defense will be looking to force some turnovers. Just like with Murray, in the 2 games the Legends have won, the defense has forced a turnover or two. This is a big game for the Legends as they try to keep their season alive. Kickoff against Orlando is at 2:00 and follow @BirdsInTheBenz on twitter throughout the game.

Legends Host Express

The Atlanta Legends will look to get their second win of the season this afternoon against the Memphis Express. The Legends last week had to go with Aaron Murray after quarterback Matt Simms left the game with an injury. Murray helped lead the Legends to a 14-11 victory over the Arizona Hotshot. The Legends will be looking for Murray to lead them to another victory as he will make his first start of the season against Memphis. Memphis picked up their first win of the year last week as well and went with their backup quarterback Zach Mettenberger. However, this will not be the first time that Murray and Mettenberger have faced off against in each other. In 2013, Mettenberger and Murray faced each other in Athens, Georgia when LSU and Georgia played. Murray lead the Dawgs to a 44-41 victory over the Tigers of LSU.

Just like last week, the Legends will look to establish the run and have a balance attack on offense. Running backs Brandon Radcliff and Denard Robinson will look to build off from their performance last week. The Legends will also look to convert in the red zone. Even though they did win last week, the Legends still struggled in the red zone and settled for more field goals than touchdown. If the Legends can be a bit more efficient in the red zone, then they will definitely have a good chance at getting the win today.

On defense, the Legends will have the challenge of stopping Zach Mettenberger. Since Mettenberger has been named the quarterback for the Express, he has been able to give their offense some life. However in Mettenberger’s post game press conference he did state that the offense needs to pull its weight. If the Legends defense can get some pressure on Mettenberger and make him uncomfortable then that should be enough to get the win. As of late, the Legends defense has started to play the run better and come up with some big plays. Kickoff against the Express is at 4:00 PM and follow @BirdsInTheBenz  on twitter throughout the game.

Legends Stun Hotshots

The Atlanta Legends finally got their first win of the year last night. The Legends started the game with quarterback Matt Simms, but on one of the Legends’ drives Simms got sacked and injured his hand throwing hands. Backup quarterback Aaron Murray was put in the game and performed extremely well for the Legends. Murray completed 20 of his 33 passes and threw for 254 yards. He also had 7 rushes and had a total of 54 rushing yards. Overall, Murray stepped up and made the big plays happen for the Legends. He also showed head coach Kevin Coyle why he should be the starter from this point on.

To go along with the success of Aaron Murray, the Legends were able to run the ball well against the Hotshots. Running back Brandon Radcliff had a very good game last night. Radcliff had 12 carries and rushed for a total of 48 yards. Running back Denard Robinson also had a good game as he had 9 carries and rushed for a total of 43 yards. He also got his first touchdown of the season last night. Overall, the Legends finished the game with 145 total rushing yards, 254 total passing yards, and 399 total yards of offense. The Legends also scored 14 points which is a season high for them.

As for the Legends defense, they played a very good game. The Legends defense made history last night as they recorded the first safety in the Alliance of American Football (AAF). Legends defense also did a great job of not letting Arizona’s quarterback John Wolford get comfortable as the Legends were able to bring some pressure last night. They also held Arizona to 11 points which is the fewest amount of points the Legends defense has given up this season.

Up next for the Legends is the Memphis Express. The Express just like the Legends, picked up their first win over the weekend. This game will be a big game for both teams because it is a divisional game, but can also help keep their season alive as well. Kickoff is at 4:00 PM on Sunday March 10th. Legends Travel to Arizona to face Hotshots

The Atlanta Legends are now the only team in the AAF without a win. The Memphis Express were the only other team with the Legends, but that changed last night when backup quarterback Zach Mettenberger was named the starter and he helped lead the Express to a comeback win as well as their first win of the season. For weeks now, many critics and fans including myself, have wonder will the Legends make a change at quarterback. Simms has shown that he is very inconsistent and so far this season he has thrown 5 interceptions on the season so far.

Against the Hotshots tonight, the Legends need to have success in the red zone. Last week against the Iron, the Legends had 4 trips to the red zone and got 2 field goals. So far this season the Legends have struggled with getting anything going offensively and it is long overdue to give Aaron Murray a shot at quarterback. The Legends have also struggled running the ball. In order for the Legends to have success tonight, they need to be able to have a balanced attack on offense.

Defensively, the Legends have played decently. The Legends front 7 has had success at times at stopping the run and in a way didn’t let Trent Richardson last week run all over them. However, the Legends defense has had costly penalties especially the illegal formations which is the defense rushing 6 men and in the AAF you are only allowed to rush 5. Legends defense also got called for a pass interference that set up a touchdown for the Iron.

In order for the Legends to win tonight they need a balance attack on offense, need to convert in the red zone, and not make costly penalties. Kickoff tonight against the Hotshots is at 8:00 PM. Follow @BirdsInTheBenz throughout the game on twitter.

Iron Dominate Legends

The Atlanta Legends were looking to get their first win of the season against the Birmingham Iron, but just like the first two games of the season they failed to. The Legends started the game out very strong, but failed to get any points in the red zone. So far this season, the Legends have had an awful time trying to finish drives off with a touchdown. They have shown that they can move the ball down the field, but once they get inside the red zone the Legends make so many mistakes with stupid penalties or lack of execution. Yesterday the Legends had four trips to the red zone and only got 6 points out of it. Quarterback Matt Simms did throw for 303 yards and had a touchdown, but he threw 3 interceptions. The Legends also lost a fumble to the Iron and finished the game with 4 turnovers.

Similar to the Fleet game, the Legends played a great 1st half, but couldn’t do much offensively in the 2nd half. The Legends defense for the most part did their job. They really made it difficult for the Iron to have much success running the ball. Despite their success in not allowing running back Trent Richardson to run all over them, Richardson did have 3 touchdowns. The Legends did create a turnover and it was an interception, but the Legends offense couldn’t capitalize. To go along with the struggle of the Legends offense not putting up enough points, the Legends also had 8 dropped passes and so many costly penalties. A big one was a pass interference penalty against cornerback Damian Swann. The pass interference should of never been called, but because Swann jumped on top of the Iron receiver even though the ball was well overthrown, the officials still saw reason to throw the flag and ultimately set up an Iron touchdown.

With all the turnovers, penalties, and missed opportunities, the Legends would go on to lose the game 28-12. It is time for the Legends to try Aaron Murray out at quarterback. Murray has only seen a small bit of playing time this season and that was the first game against Orlando where he completed 4 out of 7 passes for 38 yards with 1 interception. Up next for the Legends is a trip to Arizona to face the Hotshots next Sunday at 8:00 PM. Follow @BirdsInTheBenz throughout the game.
