This is not Goodbye

atlsportshq

With sadness I am announcing that ATLSportsHQ.com will be decommissioned in the coming days.

With years of hard work and dedication from many writers and contributors, the ATLSportsHQ.com URL brought a new era of sports coverage in Atlanta sports.

Unfortunately the momentum was unsustainable. Thank you to the dozens of talented writers that have lend a hand to making this site more successful than I ever imagined possible.

From the starting crew of Nate, Garrett, Malik, Daric and others, to the late coming saviors of Bob, Andrew, Reeves and many many more, and E for giving us a shot on air radio; I’d like to thank you for making the dream of having a sports website possible.

The ATLSportsHQ brand is going nowhere.

Georgia Tech @ Notre Dame Preview

http://www.ajc.com

Two of the ACC’s coldest teams face off tonight in South Bend as Georgia Tech will try to right the ship against Notre Dame. Georgia Tech hasn’t won a game since beating Notre Dame back on January 22 63-61. Since that game, Georgia Tech’s shooting has been horrendous, to put it nicely, and haven’t cracked more than 54 points. This team is more than capable of playing and shooting much better than this, it is just more of a mental thing at this point.

It would be huge for the Jackets to hit a couple early shots to get the confidence going. That’s really what this team needs right now is a spark. Somebody has to step up and have a big game offensively and provide a spark. This team prides themselves on defense, which is why they give themselves a chance every game but you have to make shots consistently in the ACC to get wins and not just compete to win.

The Jackets scored just 42 points last game against Clemson and just 49 in a very winnable game at Florida State a couple Saturdays ago. Foul trouble for guys like Jose Alvarado and AD Gueye have been a reason for this lack of offense but it is not excuse for no one being able to hit a jumper. Like I said it seems to be more of a confidence issue.

This is a game the Jackets can win. Just like every team, this team hates losing. I fully expect a big night from Jose Alvarado because he has had a down past couple games and as Josh Pastner said, Alvardo wants to win as bad as he needs to breathe.

Big man John Mooney should be the focus of Georgia Tech’s defensive strategy as they need to contain him in the low post and keep him off the boards unlike the first game where he dropped 22&14. James Banks wasn’t too far behind him with 16&10 and his effort, along AD Gueye’s late spark, was a big reason for the win.

Georgia Tech desperately needs this win ahead of two 25 opponents on deck after tonight.

ATLSportsHQ Your source for all things Atlanta Sports. Built for the fans, by the fans.

Each week, I’ll take some time out to answer your questions. Feel free to DM me questions at any time and you’ll see them answered each Sunday (or Mondayish). Be sure to check out our weekly show ATLSportsHQ Live where we discuss all things going on in the sports world live and interactively Thursday’s at 8:45 on Youtube! Also be sure to check out GameTime Radio Sunday’s at 6 PM where me and fellow HQ writer Bob co-host with our good guy E-Dub from TheHawksBeat.

Let’s get right into it.

@SDZwald041599 | What major offseason moves do you think the Falcons make?

The Falcons absolutely must shore up both the offensive and defensive lines. They also need to take a look at restructuring some contracts in order to get some cap relief. Fortunately, Atlanta is very talented on both sides of the ball and if healthy there’s no reason this team shouldn’t be a contender next year.

@Bret_A27 | Is Vic Beasley a Falcon next season?

Yes. He will have to take a substantial pay cut however. This will be his last chance though.

@BowlinBob | Do you think the recruiting game has changed in the state of Georgia now that Tech has rid itself of the Triple Option offense? Does Georgia have to work double time to get these recruits?

The recruiting game has changed definitely but there’s a huge BUT in my opinion. While Georgia Tech has one of the nicest campuses in the nation, they have a significant recruiting disadvantage. Most four and five star recruits go to school strictly for football and could care less about the actual education. Despite what the media may try to portray, these players at big schools such as Alabama, UGA etc aren’t really doing much “school”. But at Georgia Tech, you’re there for school too. And it pays off for your future. So it’s a give and take. You can really set your future up well going to play for Coach Collins at Tech. All in all, Tech will get some better recruits but I can’t envision any top five recruiting classes and/or making Kirby really sweat in Athens.

@_RMiller30 | What you gonna do when the Hawks make the playoffs this year?

The Hawks absolutely are not making the playoffs this year. While the Hawks have greatly overachieved in the past two months, there’s no chance we can make up that much ground in the last 25-30 games.

Let’s get right into it.

@JohnMCollins | Will Taurean Prince be moved by the deadline?

I would be shocked if Taurean was moved by next week’s deadline. However there is this…

It would take a massive haul (prospect + first round pick) for the Hawks to give up on the 3rd year Forward. I don’t see any team banking on him to be a difference maker.

@SDZwald041599 | Who do you think will be the next to bring a championship to the city?
Atlanta United will repeat as champions! Braves are also close and if the Falcons can put it together, they will be in the mix as well.
It’s an exciting time to be an Atlanta sports fan!
@youcant4cme | You think the Falcons can actually have a defense next season?
Falcons have top five talent in the league. Despite a slew of injuries on the defensive side of the ball, they managed to go 7-9 with several close losses. If they are able to stay somewhat healthy next year this is a Super Bowl contending team.
@SharpBetsPsyche | Is DeAndre Bembry going to be a hawk long term?
If you asked me this right before the season, my answer would be a strong no. Bembry is finally enjoying full health and has even found his three point shot. Keep in mind, Bembry didn’t hit a three until April of his rookie season.
@darrylfreshd | Who do the Hawks take if they finish with the 4 or 5 overall draft excluding Zion or RJ?
At that point you just go best player available at any position other than PG.

@Nasteedunx | What will it take to get D’Marcus Simonds some Ja Morant style hype?

A March Madness upset. Shoutout RJ Hunter.
Also, Georgia State is a really underrated program that I think will start to see more high level recruits come through.

@femaleatlhawk | Will Hawks make the playoffs next season? If yes, with what lineup?

Absolutely! Since the rebuild has begun, I have maintained that the Hawks would make the playoffs in 2020. Being the Eastern Conference where 38 wins will usually get you in the Hawks should easily find themselves in contention.

I think they’re even ahead of schedule development wise this year. Add another lottery pick (likely two) to the feisty young core and we could be talking!

Trae Young, Kevin Huerter, Draft/FA, John Collins, Draft/FA

@Jansen_Harris (IG) | Will Kent Bazemore be traded?

I hope not. A contender may get desperate and offer us a first rounder which GM Travis Schlenk would find hard to deny. Kent Bazemore has already expressed interest in resigning with the Hawks for what it’s worth.

Also HQ fans, be sure to check out everything Jansen is doing over at the JustGoodNetwork!

@ATL_pillowtalk (IG) | Will the Falcons bring back the all black unis?

I think it will continue to be a one yearly throwback theme game.

@k1dn0thng (IG) | Will there still be a Freeman/Coleman duo next season?

No. The Falcons need to find creative ways to manage their cap right now and shore up their lines.

Message from CEO Phil Veasley,

Over two years ago, after becoming frustrated with some of the negativity in coverage by other Hawks sites, I decided to start my own site. That was AtlantaHawksTalk.com. At that point, it was always my goal to create an entire network of sites for Atlanta Sports.
Beginning as just Hawks, we have been busy implementing Atlanta United ,Atlanta Braves , Falcons and College Football coverage.
We have a fantastic team of over a dozen of the most talented up and coming writers who have a passion for covering the Atlanta Sports scene.
We hope you all join us on our journey. As always we are Built For The Fans, By The Fans.

Thank you,

Phil Veasley
